Characters you Would Like to Meet in Reality

I've been thinking a lot likely about how real some characters appear to be. This might sound creepy, but there are some actually some literary characters I would love to have a conversation with (some of my own creation--and oh, what a heady feeling that is : ))

So my question for you ...
(If you are a writer)
If you could meet any character from one of your own pieces, who would it be, and why?
(If you are a reader)
If you could meet any character from a work of literature you've read, who would it be and why?

And if, like me, you are a reader and a writer, please feel free to answer both.

I'll be posting my own answer in the comments section later as I have to go to lunch duty in five minutes. Ah, it stinks when the day job and the heart's job interfere with each other : )

  1. You're right...life's lesser fun pursuits have a way of pooping on the others. :)

Hmm, I'm a reader/writer, and since my current ms is full of compilations of people I know in real life, I talk to them often! Would love to chat with any of Harper Lee's TKAM characters, or the author herself. Kathryn Magendie's Virginia Kate would make a fun dinner companion too. Hmmm, gonna have to rent out a large auditorium if I don't quit now!

  2. Myles, hands down. Or maybe Esmeralda. I'd want to meet them because they are imprinted so vividly on my subcranium.

I'd like to meet Mel and Vidanric from Crown Duel. I'd also love to meet Lizzie Bennett.

  3. I'd love to visit with Darcy. Hello! But from other stuff...I think I'd like to meet Saphira. I mean if you're going to meet someone you can't meet it might as well be a dragon. That would be incredible.

  4. I have characters named Will and Ajax I love, down and out types who triumph in the end. I admire that, obviously.

Edmund Rochester, Caleb Trask, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Morrell . . . I better stop now.

  5. For my characters - I want to meet them all

From other books - Daemon Sadi from Anne Bishop's Blood Jewels Trilogy, Eve Dallas and Roarke from J.D.Robb's "In death" series; Jack Ryan (Tom Clancy)...I am sure I can think of plenty more but these will do.

  7. Hmmm...even though I write, I'd most want to meet one of the characters from Narnia. Maybe Aslan...but also probably Edmund. I try to be like Lucy, but I'm Edmund.

  8. Well, since I do both, I'll give answers for both. I've already met the woman who helped inspire my MC Rosalie. So I'd like to meet Rosalie, if she existed. I'd like to meet Kris from my short story, because he just is so cool. As for reading, I'd like to meet Roland from the Dark Tower series, the Walking Dude from the Stand (a scary proposition, but hey), Tom Bombadil, and Boba Fett (yes he was in a book, I forget the title but it was all about him).

  9. Ummmm, sorry. That's supposed to be Edward Rochester and Mr. Norrell. I shouldn't comment until my coffee kicks in. :-)

  10. Wow, this has been so much fun to read : ) Thanks, everybody, for leaving comments on this one ... it's given me mucho pleasure!

As a reader, I would love to meet Roland of Gilead from Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" epic. His wisdom, strength, willingness to do what he needs to do regardless of the cost, and his sense of humor that shows up just when you're considering writing him off as a robot ... just, wow! Also, he is a linchpin of destiny, of the way things are supposed to be, and that would be sort of like meeting God, I suppose. The Gunslinger=my literary hero, hands down.

From my own works, I'm probably most interested in the character of Roy. He's a jerk, but a jerk with a good heart and good intentions. He's overcome unspeakable obstacles with his psyche pretty much intact, and I totally respect and adore people like that. Also, I enjoy how he tries to avoid any recognition when he helps people. I'd probably think he was an arrogant asshole if I hadn't created him, but "knowing" him as I do, I'd still like to meet him.

  11. Snoopy and Schroeder: One for his creativity and free spirit, the other for his loyalty, passion, and dedication.

  12. As a writer, I'd like to meet Shirley, from the new novel I'm working on, although I fear she would chew me up and spit me out. Not that she's mean, she just might be a little too much for me! As a reader,I'd love to hang out with Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird. I always wonder what she grew up to be...

  14. As a writer: Harold Smith, Emperor of Destiny
As a reader: Isambard Smith from Space Captain Smith

  15. CMC--Charles Schulz was a genius ... how remarkable that he was able to capture the essence of characters so deeply through a medium that is not always given the literary credence it is due.

Chris--I think Scout grew up to be a teacher. Nothing like Miss Caroline Fisher, of course : ) She's one of my favorite characters ever.

Litgirl--Agree across the board. I think I'd like to know Hamlet in a before/after way especially ... how fascinating would that be????

Martin--You know what they say about people named Smith ;)
