Soliciting "Giveaway" Advice ... Help!

So, my two year blogaversary is coming up on March 8th ...

I'm very excited and grateful and want to do a giveaway ... but having never done this before, would love some advice on how to proceed/organize/what sort of thing is good to give away?

Advice (I'm always soliciting advice ... it must get old sometimes ;-)) left in comments or via e-mail is much appreciated!

  1. I had a giveaway last year. It was Autumn so I asked people to leave a comment on what cosy meant to them. I gathered together cosy items as the prize. I then placed all the names in a cosy hat and got Chris to pick out a name (on a piece of paper). I notice that people's giveaways follow a theme;time of year, colour, something they are interested in etc. Some people request that you are a follower to enter, some do not.
    Have fun with it!

  2. Good luck! I have run contests from time to time and people that win never want to accept their prize! I had one guy win one troy ounce of pure silver bullion and he didn't accept it! Maybe a giveaway will be better.

  3. I have no advice, as I've been blogging almost 3 years now and have never done this. I know from reading other blogs that most readers never accept the giveaway items anyway.

But I hold out the possibility that I might be wrong on this account. Maybe. :)

  4. I've run contests/giveaways before, and I know lots of people how have as well. In my case (and their cases), those who win always accept the prize. But here are a few tips...

-Whatever it is, make sure it isn't something that is too difficult to mail.
-Have some sort of "catch" to your contest. Either they have to follow... They have to answer a question... something that records who they are so you have something to draw from.
-Give everyone who enters a number and then use a tool such as the Random Generator (www.random.org) to select a number (and the winner).
-Have your contest/giveaway run over a few days to increase the number of participants (and - hopefully - followers).
-Finally, make sure people leave you a way to contact them. Not everyone has an email address connected to their blog and not everyone has a blog. I've run into the problem where someone entered and won, but I couldn't get in contact with them because they didn't leave an email or had a blog. So, I had to pick another winner.

    Hope this helps! :)

  5. Don't do international entries as the postage will murder you. Oh...that's just ruled me out.

  6. There are no rules! Make the announcement with your own flare. Books and giftcards are always popular. Good luck!

Thanks for visiting my blog recently. It's great to connect with new people, and I love that you mention right up front that you love thinking and "conversing about thinking." Me too! :)
